Everyone seems to have their own special way of washing cloth diapers. Remember there is no hard and fast rules for cloth diaper washing. What might work for you may not work for others. It is best to follow manufacturer instructions when caring for your cloth diapers. See list below for manufacturers recommendations.
Using front loading machines...
This is what I've used with my current baby in diapers and it is working well. You need to spend time, though, knowing your machine. A key thing to remember if you see soap/bubbles in the end of the rinse, there is still soap residue on the dipes. This can react with your baby's urine and cause some problems. If there are bubbles in the rinse then most likely there's too much soap being used. It's important to remember that with front loading machines you don't need as much soap. With how they are designed, front loaders don't use as much water and therefore do not need as much soap. This is actually true with all washes in a front loader, not just cloth dipes.
Here's my system (I have a Maytag Neptune):
Super wash with hot/cold
1 tbs Country Save detergent (yes 1 [one] tablespoon)
Occasionally I'll put a 1/4 white vinegar in the rinse compartment - this helps with the urine smell if it builds up.
The super wash takes almost 2 hours as it includes prewash and an extra rinse. This is a LONG wash, but front loaders use much less water. Cloth dipes need a long wash in front loaders for the water to really penetrate the fabric.
Why Country Save detergent?
This stuff works great and I only need 1 tbs for my diaper loads and all my other laundry! Yes I only use 1 tbs for a huge load of towels or clothes! So a large box of Country Save ($18) lasts for 240 washes with my front loader! I love it!!! Check out more about Country Save detergent at www.countrysave.com .
